Helping older adults gain medical access through MediVest: A case study at NSUT Delhi

Problem Statement

Older adults need 24x7 medical assistance and the current medical facilities in India are unable to take care of this.

A report by the NITI Ayog highlights that 70% of the elderly population is dependent for everyday maintenance, and 78% is living without any pension cover. The senior care system faces many challenges due to the lack of a comprehensive, integrated policy for care and support.

Sub Problems

  1. Continuous health monitoring - Older adults run at a high risk of medical emergencies, so they need someone to keep track of their health stats round the clock.
  2. Currently existing apps are designed for younger adults and the Ui pose a problem for the eyes of aged population. Flashy graphics, small and hard to read texts make it hard for them to use this.

  3. Emergency contact with hospitals - Incase of emergency, every second counts, and a delay in contacting medical services is one of the main reasons in fatality.

Solution

  1. Continuous health monitoring - The app is connected with a separate health device, the actual MediVest designed by our team at NSUT Delhi. This device tracks and sends health stats directly to the app where it organizes and displays these stats in a clean and easy to understand manner.
  2. The design was specifically made for older adults. The design was kept simple, with less hyper colors and high contrast for the ease of use.

  3. Emergency contact with hospitals - Special single tap buttons that directly contact medical emergency services and calls for an ambulance even when you can't speak.

A simple to use user-flow was devised to define how the user moves through the app.

Key Findings of the Research process

Key Findings of the Research process

Clean and Simple Ui

The Ui will use contrasting and large fonts and buttons. The gaps between buttons should be enough to avoid mis clicks.

Colours

Colours should be in contrast to each other and avoid bright colours that may irritate the user.

Assistance

Barriers like language and text may be there. So to avoid them, the use of voice assistant, icons along with text is required.
